Jobless rate rises to 6.1% despite employment gain in February

Despite the addition of 1,400 jobs in the National Capital Region, the Ottawa-Gatineau unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to 6.1 per cent in February, according to new data released Friday by Statistics Canada.

The rise in the number of jobless people was largely as a result of an influx of workers into the local economy, with 2,300 people joining the Ottawa-Gatineau labour force.

The creation of jobs was repeated elsewhere in the country, leading to an overall employment gain of 21,000 and a 0.1-percentage-point decline in the unemployment rate, to 8.2 per cent.

R&D employment rises

A new study suggests employment in research and development is on the rise in Canada.

Statistics Canada reports there were 228,680 full-time equivalent personnel engaged in research and development (R&D) activities in Canada in 2007, up two per cent from the previous year.

The agency says the business enterprise sector employed the majority of R&D personnel in Canada at 65 per cent.

Higher education employed 26 per cent of the country’s R&D workers, while government accounted for eight per cent and non-profit organizations employed one per cent.

StatsCan says about three-quarters of R&D personnel worked in Ontario (45 per cent) and Quebec (31).

Most of the remaining R&D personnel were working in British Columbia (10 per cent) and Alberta (seven).

Researchers accounted for 63 per cent of total R&D personnel, while technicians comprised 25 per cent and support staff 12.

Equilibrium: Apparently it applies to more then grade 10 science class…

Today I had a coffee with a professional who has a similar profession to my own.  During our coffee chat it was pointed out to me that there is a sense of equilibrium that exists within the recruitment world and the labour market.  This relationship is as follows:

 

The labour market always has either too many jobs with too few resources or too few jobs for too many resources (supply and demand). 

 

I thought this was an interesting way to look at the recruitment world because it is an accurate statement.  If the labour market were ever to balance out – where we would have an equal number of jobs to resources – there would be no need for the recruitment industry.  So what can we say when the industry is on either side of this equilibrium?

 

It seems to be common knowledge that when you are in the recruitment industry and the economy is booming and people are hiring – the times are great.  Money is to be made and it has been described as shooting fish in a barrel.  Smaller recruitment companies are formed and there is a lot of competition.

 

When times are bad, those smaller companies tend to fold or down-size and the whole industry is affected.  When the number of placements drops there is less to go around for everyone in the industry so things obviously decrease in size.  The larger companies can often look at this situation in a positive manner because smaller companies are more likely to fold during this time and offer them less competition during a recession and once the market comes out of the recession.

 

All in all, the recruitment industry is heavily reliant on the economy and depends on the fact that employers can not satisfy their own staffing needs, either due to too many or too few candidates.

Friday is dooms day….

As I briefly mentioned earlier in the week, a report that came out today shows that January was the worst month for employment in Canada in the last 3 decades.  Canadian employers were forced to cut a record number of 129,000 employees which drove unemployment up from 6.6% to 7.2%.

 

Statistics Canada has reported the downturn in employment as the largest since 1976.  The manufacturing sector was one of the hardest sectors hit setting record numbers of lost jobs.  Of the 129,000 jobs lost, 100,000 of them them came from the manufacturing sector.

 

While this situation has affected everything from the Canadian dollar to the housing market, economists are suggesting that Canadians will climb out of this economic downturn quicker then previous economic situations.
